Manage life and health insurance applications, lead complex underwriting cases, engage with stakeholders, ensure compliance, and coach junior underwriters.
1. Underwriting
- Assess and underwrite life and health insurance applications across new business and policy servicing, determining the acceptability of risks in line with underwriting principles.
- Communicate and explain underwriting decisions, requirements, and terms clearly to the sales channels.
- Lead and independently manage complex, high‑profile underwriting cases, including:
- Complaints and service recovery cases
- Post‑claims underwriting investigations (e.g. non‑disclosure detected during claims)
- Sensitive and escalated cases with reputational or regulatory exposure
- Conduct thorough assessments, ensure decisions are technically sound, defensible, and well‑documented, and aligned with underwriting standards and risk appetite.
2. High‑Risk Case Management
3. Complex & Non‑Standard Case Support
- Handle non‑standard underwriting scenarios that fall outside standard BAU processes, especially cases requiring:
- Cross‑functional coordination (e.g. Distribution, Reinsurance, Actuarial, Legal)
- Senior judgement due to complexity, urgency, or commercial sensitivity
- Act as the key underwriting representative in complex case discussions and escalations.
4. Stakeholder Engagement
- Partner closely with Distribution, Claims, Reinsurance, Actuarial, and Operations to resolve complex underwriting issues effectively.
- Support Distribution in managing expectations for complex cases while safeguarding underwriting governance and service standards.
5. Governance, Risk & Quality Control
- Ensure underwriting decisions on sensitive cases comply with internal policies, controls, and regulatory expectations.
- Identify emerging risk themes from complaints and investigations and recommend improvements to underwriting practices or controls.
6. Coaching & Capability Development
- Provide training, technical guidance and coaching to junior and mid‑level underwriters, particularly on borderline or complex cases.
- Serve as an escalation point for underwriting judgement issues.
- Contribute to strengthening underwriting bench strength and decision consistency across teams.
7. Other Responsibilities:
- Lead and drive projects as required.
- Responsible for managing team's service standard.
- Conducting case reviews and providing performance/development reports.
- Provide service support and liaison for the sales channels, provide guidance to team on case management/channel management
- Manage the team and provide leadership support when required.
Requirements:
- At least a diploma or degree
- A degree in Insurance or Biomedical Science or Life Science would be an added advantage
- At least 8 years of experience in life and health underwriting
- Experience in Singapore life insurance market will be preferred
- Good written and verbal communication skills
- Team player with good interpersonal skills
- Committed, take ownership and results-driven
