The Manager of Commercial Lines will define broking strategies, manage relationships with intermediaries, oversee complex placements, develop teams, ensure compliance, and monitor performance metrics for growth and retention.
Core Responsibilities
1. Broking Strategy & Leadership
- Define and execute the broking strategy across all product lines (e.g. Commercial, Specialty, Financial Lines, Marine, Energy, etc.)
- Establish placement standards, pricing discipline, and risk appetite alignment
- Identify market gaps, new capacity, and alternative solutions
- Support firmwide growth initiatives with technical and market insight
2. Market & Insurer Management
- Act as the senior relationship owner for key intermediaries and reinsurers
- Negotiate:
- Binder terms
- Commission structures
- Service level agreements
- Strategic partnerships
- Monitor intermediaries performance, portfolio profitability, and submission quality
- Secure market access and placement priority for complex or large risks
3. Placement & Technical Oversight
- Oversee and provide guidance on:
- Complex, large, or specialty placements
- Non‑standard risks and wordings
- Program and multinational structures
- Ensure:
- Optimal coverage terms and pricing
- Sound technical justification and documentation
- Consistency in policy wording quality
- Act as escalation point for difficult placements or disputes
4. People Management & Capability Building
- Lead and develop broking underwriting and business developments managers and executives
- Set performance expectations and KPIs
- Drive:
- Technical training
- Market knowledge sharing
- Succession planning
- Attract, retain, and mentor junior staffs
5. Governance, Risk & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with:
- Regulatory requirements
- Internal risk frameworks
- Market conduct standards
- Oversee:
- Conflicts of interest management
- Fair dealing and disclosure practices
- Premium handling and documentation controls
- Partner with Compliance and Risk teams on audits and reviews
6. Client & Producer Support
- Partner with:
- Client managers
- Producers / Sales teams
- Claims and Servicing teams
- Support key intermediaries engagements, renewals, and presentations
- Provide technical credibility in high‑value or sensitive negotiations
- Contribute to portfolio retention and cross‑selling strategies
7. Performance Management & Reporting
- Own KPIs such as:
- Placement efficiency
- Hit ratios
- Intermediaires spread
- Portfolio profitability
- Rate adequacy trends
- Provide regular reporting to:
- Executive management
- Regional / Global leadership (if applicable)

- Proven experience leading senior technical teams
- Ability to balance commercial growth with technical discipline
- Strategic mindset with hands‑on execution capability
Typical Background
- 12–20+ years in insurance or broking
- Senior underwriter, business development or placement leadership experience
- Relevant professional qualifications (e.g. ACII, ANZIIF) often expected
