About the Role

We are seeking a Solution Engineer who partners closely with Account Managers – Solutions, bridges the gap between customer needs and technical solutions, and drives and close sales opportunities across designated regions or markets. They are responsible for deeply understanding customer needs, defining success criteria, and aligning Elsevier’s Life Sciences solutions to deliver measurable value.

Leveraging strong domain expertise and technical proficiency, Solution Engineers articulate the value of Elsevier’s Life Sciences portfolio through tailored demonstrations, presentations, and solution design.

Pre-sale:

  • Conduct in-depth customer discovery to understand workflows, challenges, and success criteria

  • Design and deliver persona-specific presentations and technical demonstrations aligned with customer needs

  • Collaborate with Product and Marketing teams to stay updated on new features, product enhancements, and roadmap priorities

  • Translate customer requirements into compelling solution narratives.

  • Can support in lead generation for creating strong opportunities

Sales:

    • Partner with Account Managers to review opportunities, account insights, and sales strategies via CRM

    • Lead technical discussions and product demonstrations with customers

    • Accurately document customer requirements, feedback, and engagement details in CRM systems

    Post-sales:

    • Gather feedback from customers, Account Managers, and Customer Success teams on solution fit and value delivery
    • Ensure a seamless transition by clearly communicating customer requirements and expectations to Customer Success Managers

    Core responsibilities

    • Drive technical sales process - Lead client engagements to understand life sciences workflows and challenges, conduct detailed needs analysis, and develop aligned solution strategies. Clearly communicate the value proposition to different stakeholders.

    • Support Account Manager- Develop and deliver impactful presentations showcasing Elsevier’s life sciences solutions, tailored to customer requirements. Provide technical expertise in customer interactions, industry events, user group meetings, and conferences. Collaborate with Marketing on use cases, messaging, and customer endorsements.

    • Drive tender process - Interpret tender requirements and own the development of technical responses, working closely with Account Managers and tender teams to deliver high-quality submissions.

    • Develop solution and overall proposal to meet client needs and realise success & satisfaction - Architect and position solutions tailored to complex chemistry and life sciences use cases. Ensure alignment with customer success metrics while contributing insights to product strategy and roadmap discussions.

    • Provide support during new customer handover – Facilitate effective handover of customer requirements to Customer Success teams along with the Solution Account Manager. Provide ongoing support to ensure smooth onboarding and realisation of expected value. Play an active role in generating referrals and reference customers – Foster strong client relationships to generate referrals and develop reference customers. Leverage professional networks to identify and support new business opportunities.

    Success Metrics

    • Customer satisfaction and engagement during pre-sales

    • Conversion rates from technical validation to deal closure

    • Contribution to product improvements through feedback

    Qualifications – (education, competencies, skills, experience)

    • A can-do attitude

    • PHD/MSc in Chemistry/Life Sciences related field.

    • 5+ years of sales experience as a Customer Consultant/ Pre-Sales Consultant or similar

    • Affinity and experience in the Life Sciences domain is a plus

    • Ability to engage and interact with C-level stakeholders (universities, societies, policy makers)

    • Understanding of and experience with the scientific publishing process/industry is a plus 

    • Ability to present ideas in a clean, user-friendly way.

    • Great communication skills

    • Exceptional relationship-building skills.

    • Experienced in working in an international matrixed organization is a plus.

    • Bilingual in English and Japanese or English and Mandarin

    • Ideally based in Japan , China or Singapore (but could consider other locations based on the candidate)

    • Proven experience in complex solution-sales approach - “consultative selling”

    • Excellent analytical skills, attention to detail

    • Excellent demonstration and presentation skills

    • Capacity to travel across the APAC region.
