We are looking for a Research Assistant/Associate who will work primarily with Assistant Professor of Sociology Shannon Ang, School of Social Sciences, Nanyang Technological University. This position is especially suited for those looking to pursue graduate studies or oriented towards a future career in social research.

The Research Assistant/Associate will work on a project which seeks to understand patterns of social connectedness amongst future and current cohorts of older adults, by integrating data from various cohort studies. Other members of the interdisciplinary research team include co-investigators from the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine and Duke-NUS Medical School.

In addition, the role includes supporting the work of the Centre for the Study of Social Inequality (CSSI). This includes (but is not limited to) helping organise events (i.e. seminars, workshops), external communications, and carrying out research-related tasks for CSSI’s projects.

The Research Assistant/Associate will receive valuable experience in working with large-scale survey data and data analysis. There will be opportunities to work on publications together, as well as to contribute to other exciting projects related to ageing, health and social inequality.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate research projects and ensure they run smoothly

  • Engage in and facilitate the conduct of academic activities (e.g., organize workshops and conferences, prepare manuscripts/reports)

  • Conduct statistical analyses (including data cleaning, data visualization) of survey data

  • Organise and participate in academic activities (i.e. workshops and seminars)

  • Communicate with local and international collaborators

  • Perform other general research and administrative duties where required (e.g., IRB protocol, data requests)

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor/Master Degree in Sociology, Psychology, Economics or related field

  • A willingness to learn quantitative research methods

  • Good English writing and communication skills - essential for data analysis and communication with stakeholders

  • Experience in research in the field of older adult health, social inequality, and/or statistics is preferred, but is not necessary

  • Experience in event and project management will be seen favorably

  • Proficiency in a statistical package (e.g., Stata, R, or Python) preferred, but is not necessary
