The Community You Will Join: 

We are looking for a talented and exceptional regional tax Principal to join our team in Asia Pacific (“APAC”).  You will be located in Singapore, but Australia is possible for an exceptional candidate.
This role will report to the Director, APAC Tax, and proactively partner with our APAC Country Managers and International Markets team, Finance, Legal and Policy to anticipate and identify tax issues, recommend solutions, research and solve problems, and support go-to-market, and exercise good business judgment while performing these functions and working closely with our global tax team.

The Difference You Will Make:

  • You will partner with internal stakeholders (Country and Territory Managers, Legal, Policy and Finance) and external advisers in response to the rapidly changing tax and legal landscape relating to technology companies:
    • Interface with cross-functional teams as well as external tax advisers to implement tax strategies
    • In alignment with HQ, interact and work closely with local and APAC Legal and Policy teams to understand and help implement the company’s tax policy goals.
  • As a regional tax Principal, You will own Airbnb’s tax obligations, manage risk and be the tax POC for the countries under your remit, which will include Australia, South Korea, and other geos in APAC as required.
  • Your work will help both guard Airbnb from tax risks within our control, as well as help Airbnb achieve its APAC growth ambitions.

A Typical Day: 

  • Manage local, country and regional-level tax negotiations, audits, negotiations with government authorities, implementations and oversee compliance.  This includes any interactions with the Australian Taxation Office, State Revenue Offices and the South Korean National Tax Service.  (As well as other geos as required.)
  • Partner with local advisers and APAC Finance to oversee Airbnb’s tax obligations in your countries; identify opportunities to minimise tax liabilities and provide tax input on local stat reporting
  • Assist with monitoring and analysing tax regulatory developments and tax law changes in the region, and communicate and document its impact to Airbnb and its business model
  • Where needed, research and analyse new business initiatives (including mergers & acquisitions), and maintain documented tax technical advice and update relevant stakeholders as appropriate
  • Manage special projects in the region, and provide input and manage portions of tax integration of newly acquired businesses as required

Your Expertise:

  • 12+ years of direct and indirect tax regional experience with majority of time spent in a combination of:
    • Big 4 accounting and/or law firm
    • AND multinational tech companies
    • platform / sharing economy experience strongly preferred
  • Strong foundation of tax technical knowledge with in-depth, practical experience evaluating and advising on international business initiatives
  • Regional tax experience required, which includes specific experience managing Australian tax issues (including ATO and state tax audits, as well as Advance Pricing Arrangements), as well as South Korea. 
  • Must operate independently and act as a strategic business advisor, while keeping all stakeholders informed of local issues, while seeking input and collaborating within the Tax team and cross functionally where appropriate.
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills with ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work, influence stakeholders and communicate effectively
  • Some international travel may be required
  • CA / CPA and/or LLB / LLM preferred
