Role Summary

  •  Assisting the Legal department with management of legal risk arising from the Capital Markets and physical commodities businesses.
  •  Provide legal support to the APAC physical commodities trading business, capital markets business, managing legal risk across a diverse portfolio including commodities trading agreements, broking agreements, global master agreement negotiations, client clearing agreements, default management, dispute resolution process management, new business and new product implementation.
  •  Advising the business directly on legal, regulatory, operational matters that impact physical commodities trading, financial instruments including OTC derivatives, securities and prime brokerage, ensuring compliance while enabling commercial objectives.
  •  To review regulatory developments affecting the APAC entities within the Marex Group.
  •  To oversee legal work arising from implementing new business areas and integration of existing businesses deriving from acquisitions, as necessary.
  •  To manage advice from external counsel and associated costs.
  • All employees are expected to understand and comply with any Sarbanes Oxley operational requirements relevant to their role.

Overall Responsibilities

The duties of the role will include (but not be limited to) the following:

  • Draft, review, and negotiate physical commodities contracts, including sale and purchase agreements, transportation and storage agreements, and related documentation.
  • Drafting and negotiating various agreements including ISDA, Initial Margin, Prime Brokerage, GMRA, GMSLA, execution and clearing agreements, and associated confirmations.
  • Advise trading desks on legal issues arising from day-to-day operations, disputes, and new business initiatives.
  • Assess legal risks in new product structures and trading strategies.
  • Monitor and interpret regulatory developments impacting Marex business in APAC and globally.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders across commercial, compliance, and risk teams to ensure alignment on legal risk management.
  • Support dispute resolution and pre-litigation strategy. Providing advice directly to the desk on queries and disputes arising from physical commodities trading and financial instrument transactions.
  • Reviewing contractual rights in the context of day-today operations and in stress and close-out or contentious situations.
  • Reviewing viability of new product types and structures and the legal issues arising therefrom.
  • Review of jurisdictional requirements for cross-border activity the division wishes to undertake.
  • Liaising with external and internal stakeholders and clients, both in APAC and other jurisdictions where there is Marex presence (including external counsel, the internal trading desk, other control and support departments and various agents).
  • Research into APAC regulatory developments affecting the Marex Group and reporting/advising on regulatory developments
  • Assisting the Legal department with other urgent or ad hoc matters from time to time.

  • The Company may require you to carry out other duties from time to time

Competencies, Skills and Experience

  • Qualified Lawyer with 5–10 years PQE, with experience in commodities trading (in-house or top-tier law firm);
  • Strong knowledge of physical commodities markets and related contracts, knowledge of financial markets contracts;
  • Familiarity with international trade law, shipping, and regulatory frameworks;
  • Excellent organization skills; Good written and oral communication skills; Ability to present complex issues concisely and clearly to the business;
  • Intellectually curious and keen to learn about new products and legal structures;
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to work to strict deadlines;
  • Strong academic results, including 2.1 or above at degree level.
