Job Description

Firmware Engineer (Communication Protocol) – Fresh Graduate

Singapore

Position Summary:

As part of our development engineering expansion footprint, we are hiring Firmware Engineers (Communication Protocol) from the fresh graduate pool to join our global Power Motion Business (PMB) development organization in the Singapore Campus.

This is an entry-level role for graduates with a strong foundation in embedded systems, C/C++ programming and computer networking, and a keen interest in communication protocol firmware and real-time control systems. You will work under the guidance of experienced engineers and contribute to the design, development and testing of embedded firmware subsystems, learning how to balance run-time performance, memory requirements, simplicity and correctness, reusability, reliability, security, and safety. You will learn to reuse existing internal or external firmware components, frameworks, and communication protocol libraries to shorten the product development cycle. Exposure to cybersecurity concepts for embedded and industrial products is a plus, and structured on-the-job training and mentoring will be provided.

This position will work with stakeholders within the region and globally. This position reports into the Power Motion Business (PMB) Singapore Engineering Manager in Singapore, with functional support and mentorship through the global development engineering team.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists in analyzing, designing, programming, debugging, and modifying firmware, and troubleshoots code for firmware applications, with guidance from senior engineers. Gains exposure to analog and digital hardware and firmware operating systems.
  • Contributes to one or more areas of embedded firmware for drives products: development of FW features, FW improvements, testing, and compliance with processes and standards.
  • Supports the design, development, and testing of firmware for communication protocols, including:Ethernet/IPBacNetProfibusProfinetSNMPSerial CommunicationModbus TCP
  • Applies object-oriented analysis and design principles and real-time development practices using C/C++, Python and scripting languages.
  • Follows and helps improve engineering processes and best practices, including code reviews, coding standards, and documentation.
  • Supports quality by maintaining the link between requirements and testing, and by writing unit and integration tests.
  • Assists in investigating firmware anomalies together with the functional test team, customer support team, or other groups, and helps debug and resolve them.
  • Keeps learning about embedded firmware engineering and cybersecurity methodologies and technologies relevant to our industry through training, self-study, and seminars.
  • Willingness to work in Agile and Scrum firmware development frameworks as the business demands.
  • Builds working relationships with colleagues, mentors, and key contacts across engineering functions.
  • Works effectively in a globally distributed team environment, growing from supporting tasks to owning well-defined modules.

The Essentials - You Will Have:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering or a related discipline, with coursework or projects in embedded systems or firmware; fresh graduates or those graduating within the year are welcome to apply.
  • Master's degree in Computer Science or Computer Engineering is an advantage but not required.
  • No prior full-time experience required. Internships, final-year projects, or personal projects involving embedded C/C++, microcontrollers, real-time systems, or communication protocols are highly valued.
  • Good foundation in C/C++ programming and data structures; working knowledge of Python or scripting languages is desired.
  • Basic understanding of TCP/IP networking and communication interfaces (e.g., UART, SPI, I2C, Ethernet, Modbus) is desired. Familiarity with industrial protocols such as Ethernet/IP, Profibus, Profinet, BacNet, or SNMP is a plus.
  • Familiarity with Git or similar version control tools; exposure to tools such as Green Hills Integrity OS and Multi IDE, Jira, and Jama is a plus.

The Preferred - You Might Also Have:

  • Awareness of cybersecurity concepts for embedded and industrial products is a plus. Cybersecurity training or certification, or familiarity with security test tools such as Achilles and Burp Suite.
  • Awareness of agile processes such as Scrum is desired. Familiarity with CIP and CIP Security protocols.
  • Debugging skills, with attention to writing clean, maintainable code.
  • Accept feedback, and take on new challenges, as part of a team in a matrixed organization.
