Staff Software Engineers at Zendesk are expected to be hands-on technologists who could lead application development initiatives directly, contribute to the design and implementation of projects, and be involved in technical discussions beyond their teams. You should love finding simple solutions to complex problems, and care about not only the technical and algorithmic aspects of large systems, but the way they enable other developers to do their jobs. You should have previous experience with web infrastructure, distributed systems, or component-oriented software engineering.
- Build backend systems for our next-generation Messaging platform serving millions of users daily
- Lead technical design discussions and propose innovative solutions across frontend and backend layers
- Work full-stack in small, collaborative teams using bi-weekly sprints
- Collaborate with Product Managers, Team Leads, and Designers to provide technical insights and estimates
- Build POCs to evaluate technologies and ensure platform scalability, performance, and security
- Mentor junior team members through pairing sessions and code reviews
- Actively participate in coding, pull request reviews, and testing
- Proven software engineering experience with strong capabilities in Java, Python, Ruby, or Go
- Working knowledge of JavaScript, Node.JS, and React
- Solid understanding of high concurrency, low-latency, scalable distributed systems (Kafka, GraphQL, gRPC experience a plus)
- Strong grasp of web technologies and frontend-backend interactions
- Excellent troubleshooting skills using metrics, logs, and traces
- Strong command of data structures and algorithms
- Excellent communication skills with a customer-first mindset
Hybrid: In this role, our hybrid experience is designed at the team level to give you a rich onsite experience packed with connection, collaboration, learning, and celebration - while also giving you flexibility to work remotely for part of the week. This role must attend our local office for part of the week. The specific in-office schedule is to be determined by the hiring manager.
