The impact of your work will be felt by millions of developers worldwide as they use GitLab’s AI-powered features to build better software faster.

This role requires someone who can balance hands-on design leadership with people management, someone comfortable with the rapid pace of AI innovation, and someone who deeply understands both the technical constraints and human needs in developer tools. You’ll be based remotely and work with teams across multiple time zones.

Some examples of our projects:

  • Duo Workflow (AI agents across the SDLC)
  • Duo Chat (AI-powered DevSecOps assistant)
  • AI-powered code suggestions and review tools

What You’ll Do

  • Lead, mentor, and grow a team of 5 AI Product Designers, providing career development and design guidance
  • Define and execute the design strategy for AI products across GitLab’s platform
  • Partner with Product Management and Engineering leadership to shape AI product roadmaps and prioritization
  • Establish design standards, patterns, and best practices specifically for AI-powered experiences
  • Guide your team in conducting user research and usability testing for complex AI interactions
  • Contribute to and help evolve GitLab’s Pajamas Design System with AI-specific components
  • Collaborate across product stages to identify opportunities for AI integration and enhancement
  • Present design strategies and outcomes to executive leadership and cross-functional stakeholders
  • Foster a culture of user-centered design thinking within your team and across AI product development

What You’ll Bring

  • Experience as a Product Designer and managing design teams
  • Demonstrated experience leading design for AI/ML products, natural language interfaces, or intelligent systems
  • Strong understanding of DevSecOps, SDLC, and developer workflows
  • Proven track record of scaling design teams and establishing design processes for complex technical products
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with ability to influence at all organizational levels
  • Background in conducting and interpreting user research for technical audiences
  • Experience working with engineering teams on technical constraints and implementation feasibility
  • Track record of successful cross-functional collaboration in product development environments

About the team

The AI Product Design team is part of GitLab’s broader UX organization, focused exclusively on creating exceptional experiences for AI-powered features across our DevSecOps platform. Your centralized team of 5 designers partners closely with the AI PM and Engineering teams as well as team members from across the entire product, from code creation to security scanning, helping integrate AI capabilities that feel natural and powerful.

The team faces fascinating challenges: How do you design conversations between developers and AI agents? What does trust look like in AI-assisted code review? How do you make complex AI capabilities discoverable without overwhelming users? Your team is pioneering design patterns that the entire industry watches and learns from.

The broader UX team values collaboration, iteration, and user empathy. We believe great design comes from understanding our users deeply and working closely with our engineering and product partners. Check out our Product Design team page and AI Powered group page to learn more about our approach and current initiatives.
