About the role

We are looking for a Senior Analyst to join our Market Analysis team. The role is a six-months contract/secondment opportunity with a strong project focus. The successful candidate will be expected to deliver tangible improvements to our freight market analytical capability, including enhanced supply-demand modelling, forecasting tools and recurring market intelligence reports, while providing high-quality market analysis to support commercial decision making.

The Market Analysis team sits within Rio Tinto’s Commercial Function and is responsible for generating short-to-medium-term market insights (up to 5 years). This incorporates macroeconomic analysis, supply and demand forecasts (including downstream sectors), trading support, and price forecasting. The team leverages on these insights and analysis to support Commercial decision-making and generate value across Sales & Marketing, Procurement and Marine & Logistics.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Procurement, Marine & Logistics Market Analysis, you will:

  • Lead the development and enhancement of dry bulk freight supply and demand models, linking commodity trade flows, cargo volumes, tonne-mile demand, vessel supply and fleet productivity to freight market balances and rate outlooks.
  • Develop a forward-looking freight demand framework, translating changes in key dry bulk commodity flows into vessel demand by commodity and vessel class.
  • Build and enhance vessel supply and effective-capacity models, incorporating fleet growth, newbuilding deliveries, scrapping, vessel speeds, congestion, ballast patterns and other utilisation factors.
  • Develop short- and medium-term freight market outlooks, identifying emerging market imbalances, inflection points and risks across key dry bulk segments.
  • Produce regular freight market reports and executive briefings, distilling market developments, freight rate movements and underlying supply/demand drivers into concise, commercially relevant insights.
  • Partner with commercial, shipping, commodity and analytical teams to translate market analysis into actionable commercial insights and support freight strategy and decision making.
  • Establish clear model documentation, methodologies and handover processes, ensuring analytical tools and frameworks are robust, transparent and suitable beyond the fixed-term assignment.

About you

To be successfully considered for this role, you will have:

  • University degree in either a technical or commercial discipline.
  • 5+ years of relevant experience in dry bulk shipping, freight, commodity research, market intelligence or related analytics.
  • Demonstrated experience building or maintaining fundamental market models and forecasts, and translating analytical output into forward-looking market views.
  • High attention to detail and a proactive, curious approach to problem solving.
  • Ability to synthesise quantitative and qualitative information into clear insights.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly.
  • Advanced Excel and PowerPoint skills with experience in modelling and data analysis.
  • Willingness to learn new tools and platforms to improve process flows.
  • Demonstrated experience using AI tools and coding to automate data collection, processing and reporting workflows.
  • Good team-player who can work on independent projects and collaboratively as part of a global team.
