Citi Research is seeking a talented and analytically rigorous economist to join the Asia and Global Emerging Markets Economics team as an Assistant Vice President. This role will provide comprehensive research and analytical support to the Chief Asia Economist and Head of Global Emerging Markets Economics, contributing to the production of high-quality, market-relevant research that serves institutional client base spanning fixed income, foreign exchange, and equity investors, as well as corporate clients.

The successful candidate will play an integral role across the full research lifecycle — from sourcing, cleaning, and analyzing macroeconomic data, to building and maintaining charting infrastructure, conducting quantitative and qualitative cross-country assessments, and performing macro impact analyses in response to global shocks such as trade policy shifts, geopolitical disruptions, and commodity price movements. In addition to analytical responsibilities, the role encompasses meaningful publication management duties, including the updating and formatting of PowerPoint presentations, coordinating the timely release of regular and ad-hoc thematic reports, and ensuring that all research outputs meet Citi's standards for clarity, accuracy, and visual presentation.

The AVP will also take on independent country coverage for one to two Asian economies, developing and maintaining their own forecasting framework and contributing original research perspectives to the team's broader output. As the individual grows in the role, there will be increasing opportunity for direct client engagement — including participation in investor calls, roadshows, and corporate presentations — making this an exceptional platform for a motivated economist seeking to develop both the intellectual depth of a practitioner-researcher and the client-facing skills of a senior markets economist.

In this role, you’re expected to:

  • Data & Analytics: Source, manage, and analyze macroeconomic and financial datasets from international, regional, and country-level sources; maintain and update data models and charting libraries used in regular publications.  Build and maintain cross-country analytical frameworks to identify relative vulnerabilities across EM economies on dimensions including external balances, fiscal positions, inflation dynamics, and financial conditions.
  • Macro Impact Assessment: Conduct rigorous quantitative and qualitative assessments of global and regional macro shocks — including trade policy changes, geopolitical events, commodity dynamics, and monetary policy shifts — and their implications for Asian / Emerging Market economies.
  • Country Coverage: Assume primary or co-primary responsibility for macroeconomic research and forecasting of 1-2 Asian economies, including GDP, inflation, monetary policy, fiscal and external sector analysis.  Develop relationships with government officials and policy experts in these countries.
  • Research Production: Contribute to both regular publications (e.g., daily, weekly, monthly) and ad-hoc thematic research reports.
  • Presentation & Publication Management: Update and maintain PowerPoint-based research presentations and support publication workflow of regional and global team, including timely and accurate distribution of research to internal and external clients.
  • Client Engagement: Over time, support and participate in client interactions including investor meetings, conference calls, and corporate presentations

As a successful candidate, you’d ideally have the following skills and exposure:

  • Bachelor’s/University degree/ or equivalent experience, master’s or PhD degree in Economics, or a closely related quantitative discipline preferred
  • At least 5 years relevant experience, either at a sell-side institution, buy-side firm, central bank, international financial institution, or policy research organization.
  • Proficiency in data analysis tools (e.g. Python, Eviews, Stata, Bloomberg, Haver, CEIC) and the use of AI tools for workflow productivity.
  • Advanced PowerPoint and Excel skills, with demonstrated ability to produce polished, client-ready materials.
  • Clear and effective communications (verbal/ written)
  • Ability to synthesize complex analysis into clear, concise, and compelling narratives for a sophisticated financial audience.
  • High attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills and proven team player
