Job DescriptionThe Production Engineering Manager is responsible for leading the site technical team, including Production Engineers, Process Engineers and Process Specialists. The purpose of this role is to direct and coordinate the team’s effort in applying technical skills to optimize plant operations, resolve plant problems and enable safe and efficient production of quality products. This is both a leadership and technical role with the expectation that the Production Engineering Manager will also have plant/process ownership. This role will set team and role expectations for the team, manage team priorities based on production demands, and develop and mentor the technical staff. To be successful, the Production Engineering Manager will effectively interact with a wide variety of teams to implement change and sustain the gains. The Production Engineering Manager is also expected to thrive in a fast paced and very dynamic environment as a working leader, who gradually takes on increased responsibilities.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Drive a culture of "Do It Safe, Do It Right the First Time" with actions and words on a daily basis.
Manage Production Engineers, Process Engineers and Process Specialists.
Coach, mentor and develop Technical staff and provide career development planning and opportunities.
Establish team expectations and role assignments for Technical staff.
Comply with safety and regulatory requirements and Recognized And Generally Accepted Good Engineering Practices (RAGAGEP).
Serve as a subject matter expert and resource on the technical capability and capacity of the production plant. Understands the chemistry of the plant. Understands how the plant operates. Understands key Health, Safety and Environmental parameters including reactive chemical concerns and process safety requirements. Understands the customer specifications and expectations for the product.
Establishes Key Performance Indicators for each of the plant operations under their responsibility. On a daily basis, monitors the KPIs, trends and the ultimate performance of the unit against the plant goals for personal safety, process safety, quality and productivity.
Takes action to resolve gaps between performance and goals. Coaches plant personnel to effectively change behaviors when performance is not meeting expectations.
Lead and manage small improvement projects when required.
Creates and updates documentation including learning resources and Standard Operating Procedures for the plant. Provides knowledge transfer to the Operators and ensures it is being used.
Successfully completes assigned trainings
Fill in for the Site Leader during periods of absence (e.g. vacation).
Fill the role of Site Management Commander in case of an emergency
Minimum Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, or 5+ years experience in Leadership role within a chemical manufacturing facility
Minimum 3 years experience in people management including preparation of performance appraisals to direct report
Demonstrated drive to excel and take on additional leadership responsibilities, with potential of advancement to higher levels of leadership.
Proven and demonstrable leadership and mentoring skills.
Strong organizational and planning skills with the ability to multi-task.
Chemical, food, or pharmaceutical plant operations experience.
Experience working with highly hazardous chemicals at a manufacturing facility.
Experience establishing, tracking and driving gap closure with KPIs (Key Performance Metrics) or equivalent.
Working knowledge of PLC and Process Automation control systems
Root cause investigation training and methodology.
Methodical data based problem solving and decision making skills
Self-starter with the ability to perform well under pressure and changing priorities
Ability to communicate concisely and effectively in written and verbal formats with stakeholders at multiple levels in the business.
Able to learn technical chemical processes quickly in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
Able to effectively work in a matrix organization - Maintenance, R&D, Process Development, Engineering, Quality and HSES.
Preferred Qualifications:
Previous management experience
Six Sigma Green or Black Belt certification or equivalent knowledge
5S and Lean Manufacturing experience
Process hazard analysis training; LOPA and PHA/ HAZOP
Improvement project or capital project experience
