Seeking a proactive Legal Counsel to support digital media business in US and EMEA. Responsibilities include providing legal advice, drafting contracts, and risk management. Requires 3-6 years PQE, preferably in-house legal experience.
Hypebeast is a leading global platform for contemporary culture and lifestyle, and a premier destination for editorially-driven news and commerce. Founded in 2005, it became a publicly listed company in 2016, and today boasts a global readership across North America, Asia Pacific, Europe and more. The Group has expanded its publishing brands to a wider scope, encompassing Hypebeast and its multiple content distribution platforms, creative agency Hypemaker, and e-commerce and retail platform HBX.
We are looking for a proactive Legal Counsel who thrives on both autonomy and collaboration to support our dynamic digital media business in the US and EMEA markets. You will work directly with a diverse group of teams—from creative, content production, Finance, and IT—navigating and solving business challenges with a high degree of independence.
Beyond supporting these individual teams, you will also collaborate closely with other counsels to support Group-wide objectives and ensure we are proactively managing business risks. Your legal expertise will be key to drafting and negotiating high-stakes contracts, providing counsel on commercial and marketing regulations, and conducting essential due diligence. We are looking for a self-starter who can expertly prioritize competing needs and be a strong team player in a role that is professionally challenging and highly rewarding.
Reporting to the Legal Director, you will serve as a key legal advisor, providing strategic, risk-based counsel with a strong commercial focus. You'll be the primary point of contact for our business teams in designated regions, offering critical legal advice and support on a wide range of commercial transactions. Your mission is to proactively identify and mitigate legal risks, ensuring our business activities are always within our corporate risk framework.
Responsibilities:
- Strategic Advisory: Provide strategic legal advice and recommendations to a wide range of business units and support functions, including finance, media, and production.
- Operational Excellence: Develop best practices for key business operations, including vendor management, due diligence, and adherence to industry standards.
- Marketing & Advertising: Support all marketing-related activities by conducting legal research and examining cross-border advertising requirements to ensure our content is distributed compliantly across all jurisdictions.
- Group Collaboration: Work closely with other counsels to continuously monitor risks and enhance our group-wide risk mitigation strategies and overall impact.
- General Counsel Support: Assist with matters related to disputes, insurance, and real estate, and tackle other special projects as they arise.
Professional Development:
- Remain up-to-date on all relevant legal industry requirements and regulations to ensure our practices are always current and compliant.
Requirements:
- Qualified lawyer admitted in Hong Kong or a Commonwealth jurisdiction (preferably England and Wales) and holds a current practising certificate, or is a member in good standing of the New York Bar.
- 3 - 6 years PQE, with at least 1 year of relevant experience as an in-house counsel.
- Experience in civil litigation and/or commercial dispute preferred.
- Strong drafting skills with attentiveness to detail.
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate (verbal and written) legal advice with diverse stakeholders, with practical thinking and a commercially sensible risk-based approach to achieve solutions.
- Ability to work swiftly and accurately under pressure and time constraints.
- Commitment to handle matters with integrity, care, respect and confidentiality.
- Strong sense of teamwork in maintaining legal integrity and transparency.
If you think you’ve got what it takes, please provide your cover letter, CV and expected salary.
