SMT Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) Process Optimization
Description:
This internship provides an opportunity for a student to work on a structured engineering project focused on improving the performance of the SMT Automated Optical Inspection (AOI) process within a semiconductor manufacturing environment.
The intern will undertake a defined project to analyze AOI triggering behavior, with the goal of identifying key contributors to false triggers and false rejects. Through guided mentorship, the intern will apply data-driven methodologies to evaluate inspection effectiveness and propose improvement concepts that strengthen inline quality control.
The project is designed to provide hands-on learning in manufacturing process optimization, defect analysis, and engineering problem-solving within a high-volume production setting.
Scope:
  • Analyze AOI datasets (e.g., trigger rates, defect classification, review outcomes) to identify patterns and trends
  • Identify high-impact contributors (e.g., package types, component families) driving AOI triggers and false calls
  • Conduct structured root cause analysis on false trigger and misclassification scenarios
  • Validate findings through data comparison, observation, and engineering analysis
  • Develop improvement opportunities for AOI performance and inspection robustness
  • Conceptualize methods to sustain improvements (e.g., standardization approaches or monitoring concepts)

Deliverables:
  • Baseline analysis report summarizing AOI triggering behavior and false reject trends, including quantified impact areas
  • Structured problem analysis documenting observations, root causes, and validation approach
  • Identified improvement opportunities with supporting data analysis
  • Proposed sustainment concept (e.g., framework for monitoring, checklist, or process standardization approach)
  • Final project presentation summarizing findings, insights, and recommendations

Learning Objectives:

  • Develop skills in data analysis and interpretation within a manufacturing context

Skills Required:
  • Basic knowledge in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related fields
