Head of UW & Portfolio Management, Small Commercial Insurance 

The Head of Underwriting and portfolio management role will focus on managing the underwriting function specifically for the small commercial and lower middle market sector. This role will report to the Segment leader, Head of Middle Market & Small Commercial to ensure alignment in leveraging Chubb's capabilities, products, technology, distribution, partnerships, and brand to drive business growth in this segment.


Responsibilities of this role will include:

  • Developing underwriting strategies and identifying opportunities for product development to deliver profitable growth leveraging Chubb’s technology capabilities for the needs of intermediaries and consumers.
  • Effectively evaluate and assess risks within the small commercial and lower middle market sectors. 
  • Collaborating with line of business expertise and local in territory underwriting teams to enhance underwriting processes and capabilities, delivery method via digital platforms and self-servicing capabilities for brokers, agents, and other digital distribution.
  • Working with Chief underwriting Officer, driving underwriting excellence, provide leadership and guidance to underwriting teams, ensuring adherence to underwriting guidelines.
  • Focus on upgrading the underwriting function that supports the simplified and personalized customer experience
  • Staying up-to-date with digital technology advancements and understanding their impact on underwriting practices and market dynamics.
  • Managing the portfolio of underwriting resources, talent, and projects, ensuring efficient and effective execution.
  • Collaborating with Platform owners, Product owners and engineering for delivery of product and technology solutions. 

Key functions of this role will be to:

  • Portfolio Management & Underwriting lead / Senior Authority holder for the Small Commercial Insurance business
  • Define Digital Commercial underwriting strategies and best practices.
  • Responsibility for delivering strategic, annual plans and forecasts in conjunction with finance and the Head of Business
  • Leader of product development / distribution concepts (new and renewal)
  • Active involvement in the operational and systems developments for the line of business
  • Work with actuaries to provide regular portfolio performance reporting.
  • Manage the underwriting audit & peer review process.
  • Monitor wording integrity in line with Product Board guidance, supported by legal.
Qualifications

Essential:

  • 10+ years of insurance underwriting experience.
  • Advanced underwriting and portfolio management skills across Commercial P&C lines of business.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including verbal/written communication, relationship building and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent presentation and storytelling skills.
  • Good financial literacy, and clear understanding of P&L.
  • Good technology literacy, including platforms and data


  • Advanced project management skills.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to influence in a matrix environment.
  • Take a hands-on approach for high-complexity opportunities, helping lead the in-country teams to appropriate underwriting decisions.
  • Results driven with ability to work independently.
  • Demonstrated success with strategy development and delivery.

Desirable:

  • Deep knowledge in the Asia Commercial Insurance market, including familiarity with regulatory environments and market dynamics, particularly across property lines and Catastrophe risk management
