Lead underwriting for Asia Pacific personal lines: assess risks, set technical pricing, build and monitor portfolio P&Ls, analyze loss ratios, enforce governance, support new product setups, and mentor junior underwriters and country teams to achieve profitable growth.
Purpose
The Senior Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, selecting, and managing insurance risks in accordance with company guidelines and profitability targets. This role provides technical leadership, supports portfolio growth, and ensures underwriting discipline across
Asia Pacific International Personal Lines portfolio.
Responsibilities
- Risk Assessment:
- Evaluate and underwrite personal lines risks timely and in accordance with company guidelines and risk appetite.
- Conduct detailed risk analysis using date and make informed decisions on referrals.
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders to secure information for risk assessment.
- Present quotes to stakeholders and manage discussions with stakeholders for any adjustments.
- Manage and document referrals to higher authorities, ensuring timely and accurate communication.
- Provide technical guidance to junior underwriters and country teams.
- Determine Technical Pricing:
- Utilize market statistics and company experience data to determine appropriate premiums.
- Adjust pricing based on risk characteristics, market conditions, and profitability targets.
- Hold discussions with stakeholders to explain selected premiums.
- P&L Creation:
- Build and maintain bottom-up P&Ls statements for assigned portfolios.
- Monitor performance against targets and recommend corrective actions where necessary.
- Data & Analysis:
- Analyze portfolio performance, monitor loss ratios, and recommend corrective actions to ensure profitability.
- Use data-driven insights to support underwriting decisions and portfolio management.
- Underwriting Governance:
- Contribute to the development of underwriting guidelines and best practices.
- Lead or participate in underwriting audits and process improvement initiatives.
- New Programs and Initiatives:
- Support with implementation of new programs and initiatives by providing product knowledge and policy documents (such as policy wordings).
- Set up product in accordance with best practices for portfolio monitoring after.
- At least 7-8 years of experience in underwriting on mass consumer products, preferably in Residential Insurance, Auto Insurance, Mobile Insurance, Cyber Insurance and Extended Warranty.
- Experience with APAC markets preferred.
- Experience working with cross-functional and senior leadership teams.
- Demonstrate ability to collaborate with distribution, claims, and actuarial teams to optimize product offerings and pricing strategies.
- Demonstrate ability to balance risk selection with commercial objectives to achieve profitable growth.
- Excellent analytical, risk assessment and decision-making abilities.
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills.
