We at Pleo are on a mission to make spend management surprisingly effective and empowering. To do this, we need a dedicated team of forward-thinking individuals who are thinking beyond conventional approaches. Does this sound like an opportunity that excites you?
If so, please read on about our open opportunity for a Staff Engineer position in the Payments group of our Platform domain.

The Platform domain aspires to create a competitive edge by providing a compelling, efficient platform of golden paths, which empowers everyone at Pleo to do their best work.

As a key member of our team, you'll have a significant role in shaping Pleo to fit into our customers ecosystem. You'll help us design, build, and manage a Payments platform that will transform the way our users - partners - and our own team - work.

In essence, we're looking for a leader who leads by example and fosters excellence, not just with their code, but also with the way they work and the culture they promote. At Pleo, we value trust, transparency, and a friendly, inclusive culture. We're looking for someone who can not only contribute to our products but also to the culture and ethos of our team.

The team's scope include:

  • Developing Payments services and tools, which allows our colleagues to build high quality products for our customers
    • Treasury
    • Multi-currency
    • Spend controls
    • etc
  • Working on financial infrastructure across EEA, UK and US (card payments, virtual bank accounts, financial ledger)
  • Working with our colleagues to best integrate with our solutions

What you’ll be doing:

  • Discovering and solving intricate problems, spanning across teams and domains, or even across the entire organization,
  • Coaching and mentoring other engineers,
  • Promoting and explaining the features and processes throughout the organization.

While coding isn’t one of the main responsibilities, it still is a key part of the job. It’s hard to put a number to how much time you’d be spending on code, since it will vary differently from month to month or project to project. That said, you can expect to spend between 30% and 50% of your time in code.

You'll bring solid experience with:

  • Cloud environments / distributed systems / microservices (AWS, Google Cloud, Kubernetes),
  • Architecting and building maintainable and scalable solutions,
  • Authentication & Authorization for APIs,
  • The role and responsibility of an API Gateway,
  • Server-side languages (we mostly use Kotlin and TypeScript but we know you can learn new languages),
  • Testing frameworks (Cypress, JUnit, Testcontainers) and principles,
  • Observability and monitoring (Grafana).

Your colleagues would say you:

  • Are a great communicator,
  • Have experience with or are eager to learn new programming languages like Go,
  • Never stop being curious and love learning about new languages, principles, and working styles,
  • Coach others on your team to help them develop as engineers,
  • Advocate for a more thorough code review process and do meaningful and thorough code reviews,
  • You don’t just write code, you are a key player when designing the overall solution,
  • You foster a collaborative and supportive environment where colleagues feel comfortable sharing ideas and working together.
  • Enjoy breaking down complex problems, gathering input and aligning on tradeoffs while driving towards a solution that fits the current context.

Show me the benefits!

  • Your own Pleo card (no more out-of-pocket spending!)
  • Lunch is on us for your work days - enjoy catered meals or receive a lunch allowance based on your local office 🍜
  • Comprehensive private healthcare - depending on your location, coverage options include Vitality, Alan or Médis
  • We offer 25 days of holiday + your public holidays
  • For our Team, we offer both hybrid and fully remote working options
  • Option to purchase 5 additional days of holiday through a salary sacrifice
  • We’re trialing MyndUp to give our employees access to free mental health and well-being support with great success so far  ❤️‍🩹
  • Access to LinkedIn Learning - acquire new skills, stay abreast of industry trends and fuel your personal and professional development continuously
  • Paid parental leave - we want to make sure that we're supportive of families and help you feel that you don't have to compromise your family due to work 👶
The annual salary for this position will be 101k EUR. We’re happy to share more about our approach to pay and this range during your first call with us

Why join us?
Working at Pleo means you're working on something very exciting: the future of work. Our mission is to help every company go beyond the books. Pleo itself means ‘more than you’d expect’, and it’s been the secret to our success over the last 8 years. So it’s only fitting that we’d pass this philosophy onto our customers to help them make the most of their finances.
We think company spending should be delegated to all employees and teams, that it should be as automated as possible, and that it should drive a culture of responsible spending. Finance teams shouldn’t be siloed from the rest of the organisation – they should work in unity with marketing, sales, IT and everyone else.
Speaking of working in unity, our values tell the story of how we work at Pleo. We have four core values, the first of which is ‘champion the customer’, which means we address real pain points that businesses face. Next up is ‘succeed as a team’, which highlights how our strength lies in our diversity and trust in each other. We also ‘make it happen’ by taking bold decisions and following through to deliver results. Last but not least, we ‘build to scale’, creating lasting solutions that address today’s challenges and anticipate tomorrow’s needs.
So, in a nutshell, that's Pleo. Today we are a 850+ team, from over 100 nations, sitting in our Copenhagen HQ, London, Stockholm, Berlin, Madrid, Montreal and Lisbon offices —and quite a few full-time remotes in 35 other countries! Being HQ'd out of Copenhagen means we're inspired by things like a good work-life balance. If you don't work in the office with us, we'll help you set up the best remote setup possible and make sure you still have time to connect with your team.
