Job Description
OVERVIEW
The Senior Correspondent has a broad command of financial markets, business, economics, and geopolitics, with a proven track record of writing compelling, accurate and balanced business stories for a global audience. Having a clear understanding of CNBC's editorial and programming priorities, the Senior Correspondent is an experienced writer who can grasp written nuance and context and apply knowledge and expertise to specific story topics. The Senior Correspondent possesses strong reporting, interviewing, and writing skills, exhibits critical thinking and has a keen eye for detail and an inquisitive mind.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Write fast, accurate and coherent news copy under breaking news pressure, and multi-task in a fast-paced environment
- Write in-depth profiles, trend pieces and effectively break down complex topics that require explanation
- Cover investigative news, scoops and exclusives that are well-sourced and can withstand external scrutiny; be prepared to face scrutiny more often due to the nature of critical or "hard-hitting" content generally
- Tackle difficult and complex reporting assignments in the newsroom that require a quick news turn and demand a longer-form, analytical approach; and execute hard news and feature stories accurately and with insight.
- Generate strong and compelling story ideas that help inform and engage investors, business leaders and readers, that will continue to build on CNBC's credibility
- Ability to operate independently, having the confidence and ability to guide and mentor junior reporters
- Produce digital stories including strong copy, relevant graphics, video and hyperlinks in a way that draws search engines to the story page, engages readers, and compels them to share the story
- Pitch, report and write digital news and analysis stories which can lead the homepage
- Research financial markets data and analyze news developments for appropriate content on the website and/or on TV or social video as appropriate
- Collaborate with TV colleagues and global CNBC offices on stories
- Make use of social media and other tools to promote CNBC.com content
- Update CNBC.com pages in a timely and accurate manner, assign stories and edit copy where appropriate
Qualifications
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Possess strong sourcing in various subject areas and excellent rapport with professional, financial, research and other sources
- Experience working closely with editors on story edits that can run more than one day and which can require the answering of difficult, precise questioning
- Highly motivated, organized and detail-oriented
- Write with an authoritative voice
- Proficient in at least one media besides news writing, including but not limited to: TV work, charts and data visualization, digital video, podcasting, social media
- Take initiative to follow up on story ideas and be a proactive reporter across multiple media formats on an as-needed basis
- Excellent verbal communication skills to foster good relations with colleagues as well as contacts and sources
- Demonstrated ability to prioritize a wide range of tasks, make decisions quickly and operate under tight deadlines
- Fluency in English
- Experience working with content management systems
- A flexible attitude to working different shifts occasionally when required, including weekends
DESIRED ATTRIBUTES
- Minimum 5 years of experience working in a similar role
- Readiness to and interest in expanding into other forms of journalism including TV, social video, live events and podcasts
- Experience working for a leading wire service or business news agency/website
- Experience working on-camera both live and on tape
