Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an ambitious and versatile correspondent to cover the evolving geopolitics and security dynamics of Southeast Asia.

Home to some of the world’s most vibrant and fastest growing economies, Southeast Asia has also become the focus of intense global power competition, with China, the U.S. and increasingly Russia working to secure their respective spheres of influence. Conflicting claims and increased militarization of the South China Sea have generated tensions among major powers over a vitally important trade route, presenting serious military and diplomatic challenges for Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam.

At the same time, the U.S. military is overhauling its force structure to meet the challenge of China’s increasingly assertive military posture in the Pacific. That comes just as the Trump administration is reassessing its relationships with longtime allies, creating new uncertainty for the region.

The ideal candidate for this position has excellent analytical skills and the storytelling chops to bring geostrategic and defense stories to life for the Journal’s global audience. You would work closely with colleagues in the region and beyond on one of today’s most consequential geopolitical stories.

You will:

  • Be a key member of a flexible team that is focused on ambitious and distinctive work;

  • In consultation with your editor, identify big targets for your reporting that lead to a cohesive body of work on your beat;

  • Produce in-depth enterprise and exclusive stories;

  • Identify novel ways to tell stories, including through graphics, photos, videos and podcasts;

  • Work closely with editors and reporters in other bureaus and regions on globe-spanning stories;

You have:

  • The skills and instincts to jump on news, writing stories quickly and cleanly, including when necessary outside your core beat;

  • Strong enterprise-reporting skills and the ability to conceive and execute deeply reported articles and other signature features

  • Strong communications skills and a proven ability to work across teams and geographies
