Job Description:

McCloskey by OPIS, a Dow Jones company, is looking for a reporter within its price reporting team to cover the growing seaborne metallurgical coal and coke market.

About the Role:

This role is critical to the coverage of a commodity that continues to be an important raw material for steel making and energy transition. The successful candidate will thrive in the rigors of a daily deadline and will be part of a small but motivated group of reporters. They will also have opportunities to interface with and contribute to fundamental research within the global McCloskey raw materials team. Ideally the role will be located in Singapore and this incubment will report to the Executive Director, Research & Analysis.

About the Team:

McCloskey by OPIS provides integrated offerings of market intelligence, price indexes and forecasting. Energy transition relies on a mineral-intensive process, and it is essential to understand the dynamics shaping thermal and metallurgical coal, iron ore, scrap, steel and base metals markets, globally and in key regions across Australia, Africa, India, China, Europe and the Americas.

You will:

  • Track supply and demand fundamentals of the seaborne metallurgical coal and coke market.
  • Report on metallurgical coal prices on a daily and weekly basis that inform McCloskey's key metallurgical coal and coke indexes. Develop a keen understanding of the drivers of pricing, including S&D, supply chain and the derivatives market.
  • Report and write breaking market news and in-depth analytical pieces that differentiate
  • McCloskey content offering on metallurgical coal and coke.
  • Research and write on big picture issues that impact supply side economics including policy developments, geopolitics, investment climate and ESG, among others.
  • Be a key part of the production of the daily metallurgical coal publication.
  • Continually develop a strong contact base with sources and maintain strong client and industry relationships.
  • Engage actively in business development, assisting OPIS' account managers in the sales process through maintaining sales pipelines and assisting in the sales process.
  • Be a public face of McCloskey in the coal space, via client/stakeholder engagements, industry presentations, media interviews, content marketing.

You have:

  • At least 3 years of experience in the commodity space as a reporter/researcher including roles as a financial reporter or market analyst.
  • A nose for news and an eye for a story would be a good start. We'll train you to write with clarity and competence, and maybe even elegance.
  • Bachelor's degree in Economics, Business/Finance or Politics will be viewed favorably
