Purpose of the Role

Industry Research & Creation Division (hereinafter referred to as “IRCD”) provides a full spectrum of services ranging from industry research to strategic solution proposals. The role requires strong leadership to effectively manage teams in Singapore and Hong Kong, driving high performance by leveraging highly specialized industry research expertise.

The individual shall be responsible for 1) leading the teams to conduct research on a wide range of industries in APAC region, providing industry knowledge, views and insights to both internal stakeholders and clients; 2) guiding the teams to take the initiative to engage clients in discussions on business strategies by leveraging industry knowledge, thereby supporting business lines in identifying and creating business opportunities; and 3) overseeing team activities to ensure the high quality output and offering sound recommendations that contribute to  MUFG Bank’s sustainable growth.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Develop and accomplish the business plan to align with the Bank’s business strategies and initiatives in APAC region.

  • Lead the teams to perform in-depth analysis of a wide range of industries in APAC region.

  • Guide the teams to proactively support business lines by providing industry knowledge, views and insights to both internal stakeholders and clients.

  • Lead the teams to identify clients’ business challenges and recommend reasonable actions based on the adequate analysis and understanding of the latest industry trends, and medium-to long-term foresight.

  • Collaborate closely with managements and the planning team of IRCD Tokyo, as well as overseas colleagues, to promote global sector activities and IRCD’s initiatives as one team.

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with senior managements in APAC region as well as key stakeholders of MUFG.

  • Partner with global colleagues to gather industry information and share knowledge, views, and insights.

  • Work with various external parties including, but not limited to, consultancies, credit rating agencies and government agencies to collect information to develop robust outcomes.

  • Oversee the management of direct reports, including objective setting, performance evaluation, career development, and decisions regarding financial and non-financial rewards.

  • Provide support, coaching and guidance to the teams on complex issues.

  • Ensure the quality of research outputs by reviewing team reports to ensure the precision, organization, logic, persuasiveness, and value-added contents.

  • Act as a trusted advisor to managements on matters related to the industry research.

Job Requirements:

  • Degree qualified.

  • At least 15 years of experience, including relevant industry research expertise within the banking sector.

  • Proficiency in both written and spoken Japanese (minimum JLPT1 Certification) to effectively communicate and report business strategies, plans, and activities to internal stakeholders including, but not limited to, IRCD Tokyo, Japanese Corporate & Investment Banking Business Planning Division Tokyo, and senior managements in APAC region as well as Tokyo HQ.

  • Strong coaching and mentoring skills to lead and manage the teams.

  • Extensive experience in conducting research to prepare sound recommendations.

  • Advanced analytical skills to interpret large and complex datasets, identifying key insights and implications.

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to influence others through logical reasoning.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of industries and economies in the APAC region.

  • Deep understanding of functions, departments, divisions in and out of MUFG, to foster effective collaboration and add value to business promotion efforts.
