About this role

The Financial Institutions Group (FIG) is responsible for creating and maintaining relationships with BlackRock’s global financial institutions clients which include insurance companies, banks, and other financial firms.  We pride ourselves on creating and delivering bespoke investment solutions, advisory, and analysis to our sophisticated client base. The group is one of the industry's largest managers of insurance company assets, and our insurance practice is a strategic focus of the firm.


As a Director in the FIG team, you will work as part of a team of client facing insurance specialists with a deep understanding of industry trends, client needs, and BlackRock’s capabilities across investment management, risk, and advisory.  You will be a key point of contact for clients; to design transformational tailormade solutions which meet insurance specific needs, and work across various internal partner teams globally with the goal of delivering the firm to our institutional client segment.


Key Responsibilities:

The role entails 1) relationship management and 2) new business development to execute on BlackRock Japan’s ambitious Insurance segment growth strategy.  This role will report to the Head of FIG Japan.


Business Development

  • Proactively assess the Japanese insurance landscape, identify priority client opportunities, and independently originate new business.

  • Design and deliver tailored investment solutions to meet insurance‑specific objectives, with particular focus on illiquid alternative assets, and whole‑portfolio solutions.

  • Leverage a strong understanding of insurance balance sheets, regulatory frameworks, and accounting standards to develop comprehensive, client‑specific solutions.

  • Partner closely with internal teams including Insurance Solutions, investment teams, and product specialists to structure and execute complex new mandates.

 

Relationship Management

  • Act as a trusted advisor and primary relationship lead for assigned insurance clients.

  • Oversee ongoing portfolio and relationship requirements, responding to client inquiries in a timely, accurate, and professional manner.

  • Coordinate across internal stakeholders—including Client Servicing, Legal & Compliance, Contracting, Product Strategy, and Operations—to ensure seamless delivery throughout the client lifecycle.

  • Proactively monitor existing mandates, identify performance or risk concerns, and recommend alternative strategies or enhancements to support positive client outcomes.

  • Maintain regular, forward‑looking engagement with clients to anticipate evolving needs and deepen long‑term partnerships.


Key Skills and Qualifications:

  • Outcome-oriented professional with minimum 12 years of proven experience, preferably gained from globally focused financial (multi product asset & wealth management or banking), insurance or consulting firm with good appreciation of insurance specialist knowledge (e.g., Japan ICS, GAAP).

  • Experience in illiquid alternative assets fundraising and designing investment structures for Separately Managed Accounts is highly preferred.

  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills; ability to build influential relationships both internally and externally.

  • Ability to resolve challenging situations, exercise sensible judgment and handle complex client requirements independently.

  • Local securities license required.

  • Solid understanding of fixed income, equity and alternative markets and instruments.

  • Proficiency in both written and spoken English and Japanese.
