Job Description:

The Wall Street Journal is seeking a reporter to lead our coverage of China’s economy at a pivotal moment for the country and the world.

China is wrestling with a prolonged property slump, weaker growth, a shrinking population and a pullback in foreign investment. At the same time, Beijing is doubling down on state-driven industrial policy and export-oriented manufacturing just as the U.S. and its allies raise trade and technology barriers and talk about “de-risking” from China. Those choices are reshaping global supply chains, investment flows and the competitive landscape for companies from Detroit to Düsseldorf.

We’re looking for a reporter who can explain this shift with clarity and authority: charting what’s happening inside China’s economy and showing how it is rippling through markets, boardrooms and households around the world.

You will:
  • Own the China-economy beat, delivering distinctive coverage on growth, industry, trade and policy decisions and what they mean for global business and finance.

  • Break news on key developments, from data surprises and regulatory shifts to corporate decisions that signal how multinationals and investors are reassessing their exposure to China.

  • Report deeply on big structural themes, including the property downturn, demographics, changing foreign investment, industrial policy and the “rewiring” of global supply chains.

  • Combine on-the-ground reporting with close analysis of economic, trade and demographic data to spot trends early and challenge conventional wisdom.

  • Tell stories in ways that resonate with readers: through tightly written news pieces, ambitious enterprise, investigations, visuals, and collaborations with video, audio and graphics teams.

  • Work closely with colleagues across Asia, the U.S. and Europe to conceive and lead globe-spanning coverage at the intersection of economics, geopolitics and business.

  • Develop a strong network of sources in government, business, finance, academia and policy circles and draw on that network to produce exclusive, agenda-setting journalism.

You have:
  • A proven track record of high-impact reporting on economics, business, markets or China, ideally for a major news organisation.

  • The ability to move quickly on breaking news while maintaining accuracy, clarity and a strong sense of what matters most for readers.

  • Experience turning complex data and policy debates into clear, accessible stories that are grounded in real people and real businesses.

  • Strong enterprise skills: you can originate, pitch and execute ambitious projects as well as contribute to larger team efforts.

  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills, and comfort working across time zones and coverage areas.

  • A deep curiosity about China’s role in the global economy and an instinct for spotting stories where geopolitics and money collide.

  • Chinese language skills are a plus, but not required.
