Overview of the role

Reporting to the Global IT Project Manager, the BI Data Analyst is responsible for designing, delivering, and supporting enterprise-grade business intelligence and analytics solutions using Microsoft Power BI and the Power Platform, with a strong focus on supporting commodity trading (e.g. oil, metal, gas, power, LNG, derivatives), shipping and trade lifecycle activities (e.g. operation, risk management, contract, settlement, letter of credit, etc.) . The role is critical for translating trading-specific data insights into actionable business decisions.

The role acts as a subject-matter expert (SME) for Power BI while also possessing strong business analysis capabilities, enabling data-driven decision-making through high-quality dashboards, governed datasets, automation, and strong stakeholder engagement.

Main Responsibilities

1. Strategic Collaboration & Business Alignment

  • Partner with business users, senior management, and IT stakeholders to understand analytical needs and translate them into actionable BI solutions.
  • Work closely with commodity traders, risk managers, and business teams to ensure that the analytical solutions are aligned with market, trading and operation activities.
  • Gather, document, and validate business requirements; recommend analytical approaches aligned with business objectives.
  • Translate complex commodity trading business problems into technical designs that deliver clear insights and measurable business value.
  • Proactively engage with senior business stakeholders to identify areas of improvement in trading and shipping operations and support business development through data-driven insights.

2. Innovation & Product Development

  • Design, develop, and maintain Power BI datasets, reports, and dashboards to meet evolving business requirements.
  • Build and deliver end-to-end analytical and automation solutions using Power BI, Power Apps, Power Automate, and AI Builder tailored to the commodity trading and shipping business.
  • Build solution prototypes where needed to validate concepts and accelerate delivery.
  • Work closely with the data architect and data engineering team to design and deliver analytics-ready datasets through data ingestion, cleansing, and transformation.
  • Document analytical logic, data models, and datasets to support advanced analytics and future enhancements

3. BI Adoption & Enablement

  • Act as the go-to expert for Power BI and data analytics–related user queries within the commodity trading and shipping domain.
  • Conduct Power BI end-user training sessions and provide ongoing guidance and best-practice support.
  • Promote effective BI usage patterns and self-service analytics across the organization
  • Advocate for the importance of data governance and business rules specific to commodity trading and shipping to enhance the accuracy and timeliness of trading decisions.

4. Operational Excellence

  • Enforce BI governance standards and best practices to maintain data quality, consistency, and auditability, ensuring that data used in trading decisions is highly reliable and actionable.
  • Monitor and optimize report performance and dataset refreshes to ensure stability and scalability.
  • Maintain clear technical documentation, release artifacts, and operational procedures

Profile

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Data Analytics, Business Analytics, or a related field.
  • Microsoft certifications in Power BI / Power Platform / Fabric are highly preferred.
  • Strong understanding of commodity trading environments is required (oil, metal, gas, power, LNG, derivatives). In-depth knowledge of the trading lifecycle, including market trends, operation, PnL, positions, settlements and risk management, is essential.
  • Experience working with trading data (e.g., PnL, risk, positions, settlements) and ETRM systems is highly preferred.
  • Strong expertise in Microsoft Power Platform, with Power BI as a core specialization (SME level).
  • Excellent SQL skills and solid understanding of data modelling concepts.
  • Strong business analysis skills, capable of interpreting trading requirements and translating them into technical deliverables.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills, capable of exceeding stakeholder expectations, particularly in the context of trading and business analysis.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and well-organized, with strong time-management skills.
  • Comfortable working under pressure in a fast-paced, trading-focused environment.
  • Team player with a collaborative mindset.
  • Fluent in English (spoken and written). Any other language is an asset.
