Reporting to the Managing Director, Portfolio Management, Alternative Assets, this role is a member of the Asia General Account Portfolio Management, Alternative Assets team, responsible for the management and oversight of USD 20 billion in alternative assets on behalf of Manulife’s Asia Life Insurance Companies.  The team covers a broad range of asset classes including private equity, infrastructure, real estate, private credit and timber & agriculture. 

The Assistant Portfolio Manager – Alternative Assets will play a critical role managing and administering the continued growth of alternative assets within the regional balance sheets while participating in deal processes associated with high-profile investments.  This role collaborates with various asset origination desks and functional areas such as Tax, Legal, Accounting, Operations and Capital.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Assist with due diligence on alternatives investment opportunities, tracking key items and progress to support and contribute to tailor-made investment recommendations to Manulife’s Asian business units.

  • Conduct research to produce client reporting and inform investment decisions and portfolio assessments.

  • Coordinate with other portfolio managers and operations on funding and receipt of capital related to investments.

  • Prepare ALDA investment positions, performance and activity reporting for investors, senior executives, and other key stakeholders.

  • Drive deal allocation process, tracking clients’ investment demand and recent commitments to propose, with the assistance of the Managing Director and Asset Liability Management, allocations of new opportunities.

  • Monitor foreign exchange and interest rate risks arising from global ALDA investments.

  • Support ad-hoc projects and initiatives as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Undergraduate degree in finance, business studies, actuarial science or engineering; CFA or CAIA designation preferred.

  • 3+ years experience in investment management and advisory.

  • Strong analytical and project management skills

  • Excellent PC skills; especially with Microsoft Excel (knowledge of advanced formulas, pivots, macro/ VBA knowledge is a plus), Power Point and Word.

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to work productively with multiple parties at varying levels in the global organization.

  • Demonstrated self-starter and team player

  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity and uncertainty

  • Ability to work steadfastly, flexibly and efficiently, multi-tasking in a fast-paced environment
